Committee

Vietnam and some other Southeast Asian countries are experiencing rapid industrial development. However, environmental problems have resulted from some of this development, especially near industrial zones and big cities. The slow development of environmental regulations and regionally relevant environmental science, especially environmental toxicology, in Southeast Asian countries have limited understanding the effects of contaminants in the environment and make it difficult for environmental risk assessment of proposed developments, and development of risk-based environmental quality guidelines. Failure to improve this situation would likely lead to over load of contaminants and affect the natural habitat and ecosystem services and the health of populations of living organisms, including humans. The purpose of this symposium is to invite scientists with expertise in environmental toxicology and risk assessments for environmental and human health from developed countries, and with experience with risk management in developing countries in the region, to Quy Nhon to discuss and exchange experiences with local scientists and managers in Southeast Asia. Through this meeting, the organizers expect to develop a collaborative pathway forward for research, education and training for solving environmental problems and better future environmental management in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
